The date of the Determinatio is a matter of some importance, because it influences how we understand Wyclif ’s public stature and his relationship to Crown in the period from 1373 to 1377.

Thus, such statements are a necessary cause for formal heresy charges. But theologically dubious statements were not by themselves a sufficient cause for formal charges. Formal charges required that episcopal or university authorities have a desire or motive to intervene and bring charges. In the absence of a motive to bring charges, they did not occur. It is not enough to assume that bishops were automatically concerned enough about heresy to oppose it. Before the late fourteenth century, English bishops as a whole seem to have been generally disinterested in the problem of heresy; surviving episcopal records from the fourteenth century up to the 1380s reveal only about a dozen cases in all, and this is not entirely explainable with the argument that there simply was little heresy in England.
