Both of Amy’s grandfathers were major figures in the scientific world of the 1840s and attracted to Swansea some of the leading savants of the period, all of whom helped to furnish for the young Dillwyn family a cultural environment that could hardly have been bettered anywhere in the country. At the end of 1847 grandfather Dillwyn was working hard to organize the detailed preparations for the British Association Meeting in Swansea, but on hearing some disturbing news about his beloved little Amy, he spent some of his valuable time checking that all was well at Parkwern.
