It is absurd to have a hard and fast rule about what one should read and what one shouldn't. One should read everything. "9 We are still mapping the precise relations of gay men and lesbians, the sexually different, to the avant-garde, the culturally different, including what is aggressively so. We recognize the presence of at least two connections. One is the mutual attraction of the sexually different and the culturally different, the homosexual and the avant-garde. A second is the fear that sexual difference is too transgressive, too fearful but also too secretly attractive, to tell of it in a matter-of-fact way.

Heart of Darkness and Apocalypse Now are transgressive texts in that they reflect a precariousness of social knowledge in their cultures. Whaley's perspective provides new insights for the interpretation of the two works' protagonists and sociopolitical aspects of their worlds. The main argument is persuasive: the "horror" experienced by the protagonists is a forceful metaphor of the terror of anomie that is caused by the respective colonialist and imperialist discourses and the perceptions of their illegitimacy.
